Carers have different needs at different stages of their role. The government or social services can develop measures to meet the needs of carers at different stages:
1. Preparation/Quasi-caregiver
Understanding the basics of caregiving, potential challenges and available support services. Psychological support is also required to cope with the tasks ahead.
2. New caregivers
Learning practical caregiving skills to cope with daily challenges. Support and guidance may be required, e.g. in symptom management and medication administration.
3. Long-term caregivers
Need to be prepared to look after themselves and each other.
4. Experienced caregivers
Absorb knowledge and learn skills to deal with changes in the patient's condition. At the same time, you need to look after your own health.
5. Retired/graduated caregivers
Look forw identities and goals. Psychological support may be needed to adapt to life changes.
